Whatnot thumbnail size, without the guesswork
Start with a vertical canvas: Whatnot recommends 1080 × 1920 pixels, a 9:16 ratio, for show thumbnails. Then make the show readable on a phone, not just on your editing screen.
What Whatnot actually specifies
Whatnot’s Help Center says to use a vertical image or video, with 1080 × 1920 as the recommended size. This is a recommendation, not a stated minimum resolution. If you leave the thumbnail empty, Whatnot uses your profile photo. That works as a fallback, but tells buyers less about this particular show.
The scheduling article also links to Whatnot’s Show Thumbnail Template on Canva. Use the template linked from the official guide as a starting point, then replace its details with your show’s.
Safe zones: advice, not invented rules
The official scheduling article does not give numeric safe-zone margins. It also does not specify image file formats or a maximum upload size. Don’t treat a random pixel diagram or file limit as an official requirement.
Our design advice: leave breathing room around the edges and keep essential text away from corners. Preview the uploaded thumbnail in Whatnot before saving your show. Check whether the app’s labels or crop cover the shop name, show title, or featured card. Move those elements inward if they clash. The preview matters more than a guessed margin.
A thumbnail checklist for your next break
- 1. Name the show clearly. Use a short title that says what you’re breaking or selling.
- 2. Feature one main hit. Choose a sharp card or product photo. Avoid burying it under a collage.
- 3. Keep your shop recognisable. Reuse your colours and type. Let the show change, not your whole look.
- 4. Show the time zone. If your image includes a start time, include its zone. Update rescheduled shows.
- 5. Shrink the preview. View it at phone-feed size. If the title disappears, shorten it or increase its size.
Use contrast deliberately: light text against a dark area, or dark text against a light area. A busy card photo needs a quieter area behind the words. Tiny chase lists and long paragraphs rarely survive a small preview. Put extra details in the show description instead.
Reuse the brand, resize the layout
A vertical thumbnail is not the same layout as a square Instagram post. Keep the same shop name, colours, featured hit, and show details across both. Rearrange them for each shape rather than cropping away important text. Check every version after a date or title change.
